In collaboration with the Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, Calcutta University (CU), IIA runs a very unique Integrated M.Tech – Ph.D. (Tech.) Programme in Astronomical Instrumentation. The focus of this programme is to train bright and motivated students who will gain expertise in emerging areas of high-end technology to cater to the needs of astronomy hardware and instrumentation in the country.
The Integrated M.Tech-PhD programme at IIA is overseen by the Board of Graduate Studies (BGS), which takes care of the academic and related activities of the Ph.D. students. Selection to this programme is through an online application in April/May, followed by interviews of shortlisted candidates in June/July.

The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) and the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) announce a joint M.Sc. (Physics with Astrophysics) programme, having recognized a growing need for broadly trained students to work on large astronomy/astrophysics projects such as LIGO-India, TMT, SKA, space-based astronomy missions, etc. within the country. This programme is envisaged to be a flagship Masters' programme to prepare students to undertake research in contemporary astronomy and astrophysics. The M.Sc. programme will provide the requisite training in physics and astrophysics through theoretical physics and astrophysics courses, experimental, observational, and computational work, and projects on current research topics. This will be a standalone programme, but some of the courses will be shared with the existing M.Sc. programme in physics at SPPU.
Eligibility and Admission:
The admission to the M.Sc. Programme - 2025 will be based on the written score of IUCAA National Admission Test (INAT)-2025.

IIST offers M.S. programmes under (i) Regular Academic stream for admission of general candidates, and under (ii) DoS / ISRO stream, for admission of young scientists and engineers, in Earth and Space Sciences - Master of Science in Astronomy and Astrophysics
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has an active research group in Astronomy and Astrophysics that is part of the Physics department. Currently this group has seven faculty members, working in different areas of astrophysics.
The IISc astrophysics group started in 1986. We also coordinate the Joint Astronomy Programme (JAP) – a programme for training PhD students in astrophysics, jointly run with several collaborating institutes within Bangalore:
Raman Research Institute (RRI)
Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA)
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)
The Joint Astronomy Programme was established in 1982 before there was any astrophysics group in IISc. Earlier more institutes were part of this programme. The Physics Department of IISc is the host of this programme. All students in the programme remain registered with IISc.
